Ive been Vegan now for as long as I can remember. The food we eat is entirely cruelty free, the household products we use are natural and free of parabens, we also don’t purchase leather, wool or sheep skin, but I’ve never really considered buying entirely vegan (and even raw!) make-up and cosmetics….until just recently.
Some lovely vegan, gluten-free and raw skincare companies got in touch with me a couple of weeks back and I was sent a bunch of beautiful skincare, haircare, and make-up products to try. Really, my mind has been blown. Four and a half years into my vegan whole foods journey, I can now wholly say that I don’t think I’ll ever buy synthetic skin-care products again!
Since Luminance sent me their cleanser, acne serum, rose water toner and moisturiser a couple of weeks ago, my skin has been clearer than it has been since I stated having major break-outs two years ago (surprised? The wonders of pure cosmetics!). All products are filled with essential oils like rose water, so naturally they leave you smelling divine. Since using Luminance products, I’ve learned that tap water has a PH that is not suitable for our cells, causing occasional irritation, yet rosewater is perfectly suited for the skin as it has almost the same PH balance as the skin – perfect for those girls and guys out there for sensitive skin like me. Vegan, cruelty free, and made without Parabens, alcohol, astrigens, synthetic preservatives and pesticides, the people behind this brand really care not just about the environment, but about their customers too!
Next on the Love list is Ellovi Butter. Nope, this isn’t a dairy product but an (almost) miracle moisturiser. Before having used this product, I was a Body Shop enthusiast, owning pretty much every single one of their delicious smelling body butters over the years. Since getting my hands on Ellovi Butter though, I may have to say goodbye (at least, for a while) to the Body Shop. This stuff is better than coconut oil. I know, thats like blasphemy in the vegan world, but this stuff makes my skin so soft it glows. It smells like sugar cookies (
so if your single and looking, rub this on your face and they will come running).
Containing pure, high quality ingredients like Macadamia seed oil, coconut oil, and hemp (all mixed together, in a cute jar, mmmmm), its just, well, perfect.
Ever heard of an ALL RAW, vegan, gluten-free and wild crafted shampoo and conditioner? Me either. Well, not until I discovered Morrocco Method‘s Pine Shale Shampoo and Diamond Crystal Mist Conditioner. Naturally, like most/all pure/vegan products they smell out of this world, so much better than those you find on the shelf of a super-market. And once you’ve tried a high quality, cruelty-free brand like this? Its so hard
impossible to go back.
Theres a plethora of righteous, sustainable, animal-friendly, health-delivering products from awesome hair and body care companies out there. Their products usually aren’t even pricey, especially when you consider what you (we) are supporting. Try it, seriously.
Next up are Earthlab Cosmetics. We buy natural cleaning products, natural shampoo’s and body washes and lots of vegan/organic foods in our house hold, yet most of my cosmetics are of the conventional variety. Im not sure why, but I think this has to do with a bad experience I once had with a natural mascara. When I applied the mascara, it gradually flaked and covered my face in large sticky gradually through the day. Not really the look I was going for.
Things have developed since then though in the natural world. I’d been doing my research and I knew it was time to take the plunge and give vegan make-up another shot. Earthlab was created by a mother-daughter team with a mission to develop ‘clean’ makeup using the finest natural minerals and raw pigments derived directly from nature. Not only did they want their cosmetics to be safe to use, they actually wanted them to benefit the skin. The resulting make-up is free from additives, fillers and preservatives.
I just had to try Earthlab‘s raw mascara. It is paraben-free, botanically enriched and made of ingredients you can recognise on the ‘tin’ like aloe leaf extract, cucumber and minerals. The mascara applied smoothly with no smudging and no flaking (hooray!) which continued throughout the day. The mascara gives a light, natural look which can be re-applied for a heavier look at night out. While the mascara contains beeswax, the vegan mineral pencil is….well, vegan. I’m the first to admit that Ive never been cry skilled at applying eyeliner. I found that Earthlab‘s vegan mineral pencil goes on smoothly, meaning minimal mistakes.
Earthlab Cosmetics are handcrafted in West Kelowna and can be ordered here.
And finally Ive discovered…Pachy Deoderants.
Did you know that anything you put in your skin gets absorbed through your bloodstream? Lets think about that for a moment. How many products do we put onto our bodies on a daily basis? Soap, creams, body wash, perfume, make-up….and deodorant? No-one wants smelly arm-pits, and like many things in cosmetics, I’ve been through a fair few brands in my time (Dove, Right Guard, Sure, and even Driclor.) I’m a long-time sufferer of panic-attacks which makes my body temperature go from anything from -3298 to feeling like I’m wearing a fur coat on a beach in the Bahamas within the space of about ten seconds. Not fun. So for me, deodorant is essential. Non of the above brand have been effective for me, including my recent trial of a natural essential oil deodorant, which actually enhanced my underarm issues. Luckily though, I’ve since crossed paths with a company – Rustic Maka – that sells Pachy Deodorants that have been nothing but fabulous.
Odor-fighting and created with in-nature, organic and vegan ingredients, Pachy is handcrafted without parabens, aluminum, triclosan, propylene-glycol, preservatives, GMO, gluten, corn, or soy by-products. They are completely BPA-free and environmentally friendly – even made from post-consumer recycled containers. Organic coconut oil and raw organic Shea butter are used as the base for all their deodorants. They also use uniquely therapeutic grade essential oils to scent their deodorants making them perfume- and synthetic fragrance-free.
Two of my favourite scents have to be the Naughty Butter and Calming Fields aromas. Totally delicious and there is no need to reapply throughout the day. I was amazed how good these both smelled, even when I wasn’t wearing additional perfume or body spray and I stayed perspiration free (think rainbows and butterflies, smile!) on one particular stressful panicky day after a hospital appointment that left me quite literally in bits. I defiantly plan on making these a long-time purchase! Thanks Pachy!
